Can We Hurry Up?
Artist: Joe DiDomenico
A tongue and cheek song I wrote in my head while driving my teenage step daughter somewhere. She was always in a hurry to get somewhere so she could get somewhere else in a hurry.
Turns out riding shotgun with a teenager is basically a masterclass in blues songwriting. She stared at her phone, I stared at the road, and somewhere between the mall and the movies this song wrote itself.
This is a more lyrically polished version with a new arrangement.

Song Lyrics
Can we hurry up
So we can hurry up
Gotta get there (now!)
Then we’ll hurry up
She’s sittin’ next to me
Going out of her mind
Face buried in that phone
Leaving the world behind
Thumbs move like lightning
But her eyes are somewhere else
Rushing to get nowhere
Chasing something for herself
And she said
Can we hurry up
So we can hurry up
Gotta get there (now!)
Then we’ll hurry up
Downtown, movies, the mall
Something’s gotta give
Gotta fill that shopping cart
She’s got a life to live
Don’t you dare ask her why
Don’t even start to say
She just knows she’s gotta go
So get out of the way!
And she said
Can we hurry up
So we can hurry up
Gotta get there (now!)
Then we’ll hurry up
Now I’ve been driving these roads a long long time
She never looked up once to see the sky
She’s got a restless soul and I don’t know why
So I’ll step aside and let the guitar try (Else I’ll lose my mind!!!)
One day she’ll slow down
Look up from that screen
Realize the ride itself
Is part of the dream
But until that day comes I’ll just
Shake my head and smile
And drive her somewhere, nowhere…
Just one more mile!
Can we hurry up
So we can hurry up
Gotta get there (now!)
Then we’ll hurry up
And when we get there…
She’ll probably wanna leave
Can we hurry up
So we can hurry up
Gotta get there (now!)
Then we’ll hurry up
